Diamond Duke

The postwar era of the 1950s have been romanticized on many occasions, both in movies and in slot games. Diamond Duke from Quickspin has all the charm of a classic american drive-in diner, and the soundtrack does a good job convincing you that you’re listening to an old jukebox while waiting for your milkshake and pancakes to be served by a busty blonde on rollerblades.
Don’t be fooled by the idyllic atmosphere, however, as there is a brutal math model beast underneath the surface here, kind of like the lurking evil in some lynchian movie. Okay, that was perhaps a bit over the top, but this is indeed a highly volatile game, but the rewards can be quite impressive also. The max win potential is 8,000x your stake, and you need the dual multiplier bonus wheel feature for this to happen.
You can at most win 800x your stake in the regular game, but the bonus wheel comes with up to 10x multipliers that can be multiplied with each other. There is also a neat pick and click bonus game with 3 different levels here, and this is really a classic 3-reeler that’s been spiced up by these “modern” features. The game will tease you everytime you stand a chance at winning something bigger, or triggering the bonus wheel, and when it finally happens the rewards can be massive.
The big blue diamond is the highest paying symbol by far here, and the rest of the fruit machine symbols are of medium to low value in comparison. There are only 3 reels and 3 rows here, and you win by landing 3 matching symbols on at least 1 of the 5 paylines. Here we present you with the paytable for Diamond Duke slot:
There are 3 bonus features you will benefit from in this game, and they are all tied in with the Bonus Wheel of Fortune you see on top of the 3D slot machine. This bonus wheel can boost your winnings with some juicy multipliers, or take you into a classic pick ‘em bonus game. We shall take a closer look at how all this works here.
There is a Wheel Scatter symbol you can be on the lookout for, as this is key to triggering the feature. You win 4x your stake in a scatter win when you land 2 of these anywhere on the reels, and this also grants you 1 spin on the Bonus Wheel. You will then win either a multiplier boost of 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x or 10x, or you will trigger the Pick ‘em Bonus Game. If you get the multiplier boost, it will be applied to your total win for that round.
The Pick ‘Em Bonus Game is fairly simple, but it comes with 3 different levels. On each level the coin wins you can pick will increase, and the coin wins are based on your total stake. You can pick wins until you hit a cross sign, which effectively ends the feature and collects your winnings. If you hit the upgrade arrow symbol, you will be taken to the next level. Here is an overview of how it works:
The main attraction of this game comes when you land 3 wheel scatters on the same spin. First of all, you will get an 8x scatter win, and then you get a spin on the bonus wheel just like we have described above. The big difference is that you get another spin on the bonus wheel after, and this time it’s a pure multiplier wheel with values between 2x and 10x, just like before. This means that rather massive multiplier boosts are possible here, which can lead to substantial payouts.
Free spins in Diamond Duke
There is no free spins feature in this game, as the scatters trigger the bonus wheel instead. It’s not unusual for classic slots to not offer a bonus round, and for this reason we don’t see it as a negative thing at all. Instead, we are happy about the extras the game comes with, as many classic slots are far more simplistic than Diamond Duke.
Being modelled after a classic fruit machine, this 3D one-armed bandit has a nostalgic appeal for sure. There is a lever to the right-hand side of the machine, but unfortunately it’s only there for show, as it cannot be pulled. The gameplay is quite simple and straightforward, but there are a few things you should know about up front.
The gear icon down to the left takes you to the options menu, and here you can toggle on/off the splash intro screen, the game sound and the spacebar as a spin button. Right next to the gear icon is the hamburger menu, and this is where you can check out the paytable and read all about the game features and rules. The paytable is dynamic, which means that the symbol values will change according to your chosen bet level.
Speaking of, you can play with a total stake as low as 5p here, and this means that the game is quite suitable for low rollers and casual players despite the very high volatility. The max bet is £100, which is fairly standard. There is also a replay feature, where you can replay memorable moments, and you find this via the circular arrow icon in the hamburger menu.
Before you get started, you need to not only decide on your bet level, but also whether or not you want to go for the autoplay option. You can choose between 10 and 1,000 autospins, and customize the loss limit or single win limit as you see fit. Right below the autoplay icon you’ll find the quickspin icon. This icon is 2 arrows next to each other, and it will increase the pace of your gameplay significantly. The little 3D model of a classic fruit machine might look cute as warm apple pie, but the math model underneath the hood is no joke. We knew up front that the game scored 5 out of 5 possible volatility points on Quickspin’s own scale, so we braced ourselves and set the autospin feature up for our first 100 spins.
We went with the standard bet level of £1 per spin, and as expected, we had plenty of dead spins throughout the test run session. A few smaller wins around 1x happened now and then, and we had plenty of one scatter teaser effects on our first 100 spins. In fact, it happened so many times that it was starting to irritate us a little bit, when we finally got the anticipated second scatter we needed.
The Bonus Wheel on top of the regular reels spun right away, and it landed on the star icon. This opened up the Pick and Click Bonus Game, and we managed to get to level 2 before we hit the collect symbol. This gave us our biggest win so far, with an okay payout of 17x our stake. Hardly enough to keep us afloat, and we had 100 more spins to go before our session was over.
We literally didn’t win a single dime on our next 30 spins or so, and the last 100 spins turned out to be pretty bad for us. Our biggest win was 7x, and we did not manage to trigger the Bonus Wheel for another go. The game almost constantly teases you with the possibility of bigger wins or triggering the bonus wheel feature, and it can be a bit much when it almost never actually happens. Anyway, we hope your beginner’s luck with this game is far better than ours was!
Diamond Duke is a charming slot that achieves its aim of bringing you back to the simpler times of diners, drive-ins and jukeboxes. The 1950s vibe is oozing from every pore here, and the game is best played with a milkshake and some pancakes. The math model is anything but cozy, however, and it can be quite brutal if luck is not on your side.
The dual multiplier wheels are capable of dishing out wins up to 8,000x your stake, but this happened only once during Quickspins 200 billion test spins. Still, it’s a solid potential for a classic 3-reel game, and triggering the bonus wheel will get the adrenaline going for sure. All the teasing in between can get a bit on your nerves though, and we’d preferred if Quckspin had toned that down a bit to be totally honest.
Pros
Cons
There are many different classic slots out there, and if you like this game we have some others up our sleeve that we shall take a closer look at here. Not all of them will come with 3 reels however, as we also base our recommendations on the 1950s inspired theme and the bonus wheel feature. We will sum up the most important things about each game, and you can follow the link to get more details if you so desire.
Big Win 777- is modelled after a classic fruit slot, but it comes with 5 reels and some modern features. This is a highly volatile game from Play’n Go, and you can win up to 5,000x your stake here. The main attraction is the Bonus Wheel of Fortune and the free spins bonus round with cloning wilds.
Deco Diamonds Deluxe- comes with a neat respins with sticky wilds feature, and you can also turn on the nudge feature if you opt for the bet boost option. There are 3 different bonus wheels you can benefit from here, and wins up to 1,000x your stake is possible.
Super 7s- is a game for players who want a simplistic slot completely stripped from bonus features. Pragmatic Play is known for high volatility, but this one is medium to high with a max win potential of 5,000x your stake. You can land scatter wins up to 250x, but you need the lucky number sevens to really win big in this classic looking game.
